Offering a uniquely Australian perspective on the US Presidential election

Operation Sovereign Blockers is an independent faction in the Senate dedicated to preventing the passage of as much government legislation as possible in the belief that this can only be good for the country. They are driven by the guiding principle that no government legislation is the only sure way to avoid disastrous government legislation.

The Blockers discuss whether their role in the Senate should be extended beyond blocking into doing stuff which might actually be construed as helping things come to pass.
The story starts here...

“Welcome to the first caucus meeting of Operation Sovereign Blockers” proclaimed Nick

“But what is there to discuss” asked Jacqui “when our only policy is a dedication to blocking everything?”

“Whilst that is unquestionably our mandate” explained Nick “some members of our group feel we should also consider actually doing something positive as well”

“But surely” said Derryn pensively “if we develop policies of our own Malcolm will simply block them in retaliation”

“That’s why we need policies as bargaining chips” argued Nick “we won’t block theirs if they don’t block ours”

“That’s a great idea” exclaimed Jacqui “I want Tassie to receive foreign aid and qualify for support from the National Disability Insurance Scheme

“And I want all child sex offenders” explained Derryn “to be sent somewhere like Guantanamo Bay where there are no children and no sex”

“And I want Royal Commissions” declared Pauline “into Islam, the Greens and whether Aborigines were the first people ever brought to Australia by people smugglers

“The essential Greens’ policy” said Sarah “is to increase electricity prices to the point where people can no longer afford to enjoy life and so rather spend their time maximising wind-power capacity through intensive consumption of artichokes and baked beans”

“I want to stop all types of gambling” declared Nick “including the federal budget”

“How are we going to react” asked Derryn “to Malcolm’s bid to re-introduce the Australian Building and Construction Commission?”

“We can’t possibly allow that to happen” exclaimed Jacqui “because it would mean that his double dissolution has worked and we independents have busted our arses to get re-elected only to get rear-ended by Malcolm”

“Well I was talking to a builder in Brissie only the other day” explained Pauline “and he told me that the ABCC was necessary to prevent the CFMEU making a motza out of the Commonwealth Games

“But that’s so unfair” declared Sarah “because the only time building unions have the chance to make real money is by holding to ransom companies with contracts to build facilities upon which our international reputation for delivering on-time and on budget is at stake like the Olympics or the Commonwealth Games”
