Operation Sovereign Blockers is an independent faction in the Senate dedicated to preventing the passage of as much government legislation as possible in the belief that this can only be good for the country. They are driven by the guiding principle that no government legislation is the only sure way to avoid disastrous government legislation.
A Total Blockout
The Senate Blockers consider what they have to do to maintain their position as the premier block against Malcolm in the face of intense competition from Tony.
“We are facing a day of reckoning” announced Nick “the time to block is upon us and Australia expects”
These stirring words caused a frisson of excitement to pass through the assembled blockers.
“Please explain” gasped Pauline breathlessly
“Well there’s the gay marriage plebiscite looming” explained Nick “which is a sitting duck and then there’s Malcolm’s industrial relations legislation which includes the ABCC”
“I know” exclaimed Jacqui “that’s the stuff David Leyonhjelm offered to vote for if he was given a shot but Malcolm disarmed him”
“That’s outrageous” pronounced Derryn “Malcolm has decided to block any changes to gun control without consulting us first. We’re in danger of losing our status as the number one on the block”
“I know” said Jacqui supportively “Tony has decided to put his head on the block to try and block Malcolm without so much as an apology to us for the intrusion into our space”
“I believe” stressed Derryn “that just to be sure we should block Tony and Leyonhjelm as well as Malcolm”
“Well look” said Pauline engagingly “shouldn’t we first consider whether the re-introduction of the ABCC would be beneficial?”
“You can’t be serious” declared Sarah “how the hell could bringing back the ABCC be the slightest bit beneficial? It would block the CFMEU’s right to block construction projects”
“The point is” said Pauline reasonably “they shouldn’t have the right to be the only block on the block”
“It’s true” allowed Nick “that the CFMEU are sometimes inclined to go off their blocks far too readily”
“But Malcolm’s industrial relations legislation” insisted Jacqui “is just a chip off the old Howard block”
“I was going to say something” explained Derryn “but I’ve just had a mental block”
“The ABCC is an obscenity” declared Sarah “it’s simply designed to block workers from following the block-heads in the CFMEU”
“Ok” said Nick “just let me sum up. We’re definitely going to block the plebiscite and we’re almost certainly going to block Malcolm’s industrial relations legislation unless he removes all the roadblocks”
“Isn’t there a danger” asked Jacqui “that Leyonhjelm could start sniping at us from some blockhole?”
“That shouldn’t be a problem” Nick reassured her “because the Senate is the safest blockhouse in the country”
