Offering a uniquely Australian perspective on the US Presidential election

Operation Sovereign Blockers is an independent faction in the Senate dedicated to preventing the passage of as much government legislation as possible in the belief that this can only be good for the country. They are driven by the guiding principle that no government legislation is the only sure way to avoid disastrous government legislation.

And It Came To Pass

And It Came To Pass

Friday 29 July, 2016
Members of the Operation Sovereign Blockers faction in the Senate meet to discuss tactics on how to block as much of Malcolm’s legislation as possible without shutting the country down altogether.
The story starts here...

Operation Soverign Blockers masthead

“Before we proceed with official business” began Nick “I should like to take this opportunity to express regret that the Brick With Eyes is no longer among us and to register our appreciation of his inspiring pioneer work as an Operation Sovereign Blocker which was so instrumental in saving Australia from the 2014 Abbott-Hockey budget”

“Hear, hear” chorused the OSBs

“Now we need to discuss our key objectives for 2016/17” announced Nick

“First and foremost” asserted Sarah “we’ve got to block the Turnbull-Morrison 2016 budget”

“Why?” asked Nick

“Simply because the more legislation from this government we can block” explained Sarah “the better off the country will be”

“And we should definitely block the plebiscite on gay marriage” stated Pauline “and propose a Royal Commission into the Mardi Gras”

“I think” claimed Jacqui “we should first decide on the measures we want to see introduced as a basis for doing some hard bargaining with Malcolm. For example I’m determined to get the go-ahead for a major museum project in Tassie”

“Would that be in Hobart?” asked Nick

“No” replied Jacqui “it would be the whole island”

“I want a ban on gambling” announced Nick

“That’s counter-productive” protested Derryn “it would mean that none of us would ever get elected”

“I want to introduce a carbon tax of $100 a tonne” said Sarah defiantly

“We’re not into supporting mental blocks” advised Derryn “you need to see a psychiatrist about that”

“Then we’re all agreed that we’re going to block the budget” summed up Nick “but are there any parts of it that we should allow to pass?”

“Absolutely not” said Jacqui resolutely “if we start off passing stuff Malcolm will think that we’re a softer touch than previous Operation Sovereign Blockers. Let’s face it if we fail to block major things like budgets we could easily start becoming irrelevant”

“Very good point” pronounced Nick “now is there any other business?”

“Yes” replied Pauline “I’m going to propose a Royal Commission into Sam Dastyari. It’s essential we establish whether he’s a Muslim or not so I can adjust my racist remarks accordingly”
