Putting Union People First

Putting Union People First

Friday 29 July, 2016
Ged and Dave brief Bill on how he should recalibrate his policies to bring them more into line with ACTU requirements and specifically put union members first ahead of people who should come second.
The story starts here...

“Now Bill” said Ged “we need to clarify what you mean by ‘putting people first’”

“That means” replied Bill “I design Labor policies to ensure that people benefit more than business, banks and wealthy elitists like Malcolm

“Sorry Bill” said Ged “but you’ve got that wrong. Your clear mandate from us is that union members come first and people second”

“Sorry” responded Bill “I was merely trying to win an election”

“What policies are you considering” asked Dave “to respond to Malcolm’s tax cuts for business?”

“Well” replied Bill thoughtfully “I believe Labor should support the tax cuts for small business but oppose the ones for big business and propose that their cuts should be directed towards vital research projects instead”

“Come on Bill get real, that’s an absolute crock” announced Dave “what you have to understand is it’s the unions that drive the economy rather than companies or research projects and so all the tax cuts should be directed to them”

“How exactly would that help the economy?” asked Bill

“It would be a clear incentive for unions like the CFMEU” replied Bill “not to do anything that makes it any worse”

“But surely” persisted Bill “Labor should support research and innovation”

“The ACTU is strongly in favour of that” said Ged “provided it is directed towards union members getting more pay for less work”

“But don’t forget” cautioned Bill “Labor’s principle of a fair go for everyone”

“Look Bill” said Ged “that’s all very commendable but it doesn’t work in practice. The unions have been battered brainless by the Royal Commission so it’s only fair that we get the chance to bash business and the banks with a Royal Commission payback despite the fact that thanks to you we didn’t get a fair result at the election”

“And another thing” added Dave “it’s time you proposed legislation that makes it a criminal offence to criticise anyone in the union movement”

“I don’t see” commented Bill ‘how on earth I could make a convincing case for that to apply to criticism of the CFMEU for example”

“Yes” agreed Dave thoughtfully “I see what you mean. I’m sure we’d accept as a compromise that the ABCC should be re-instated to hear all the CFMEU complaints about people who are abusing them”
