I was intrigued by the comments of Group Captain Catherine McGregor that the Australian of the Year should be transgender.

Is this an initiative to ensure gender balance among the recipients of the award?

Will it lead to a new award being created for Australian of the Year aspirants who just stick to the same old gender?

Or is this actually a campaign to promote transgender surgery amongst Australian of the Year contenders?

I’m worried that even if I went underwent transgender surgery there seems to be no outright guarantee that I’d become Australian of the Year.

I’m possibly an outside chance of getting a gong sometime but it’s becoming all too apparent that only people who do something really life-changing can aspire to become Australian of the Year.

About this Series
As one of Australia’s leading social commentators A Hole is always conscious of the need to avoid making an arse of himself. His commentaries are frequently compared to the material on the walls of public toilets although they don’t remain in the public consciousness anything like as long.
