The Great Divide

Friday 12 August, 2016
A Hole, Australia’s leading source of windy social commentary, discusses some alarming trends in social attitudes and whether they will lead to a Trump-inspired wall being built across our proud and sun-soaked land.
The story starts here...

If you’re gay, transgender, Muslim, feminist, lesbian, work for the ABC, an inner-city latte drinker, a member of the chattering classes, a victim, living off entitlements, in favour of gay marriage, a human rights activist, a people smuggler, an asylum seeker, a greenie, in favour of euthanasia, a Cory Bernardi and Trump hater, an intellectual, a budget deficit cheerleader, a climate change groupie and reluctant to be beastly to terrorists you are just the sort of person that Australia needs to help build a progressive future.

However if you’re white, middle-class, male, patriotic, a monarchist, worried that Australia might be losing its proud traditions, yearn for the good old days, a footy fan, believe in family values, a one Nation voter, a hard worker, self-dependent, entrepreneurial, believe in budget surpluses, listen to Alan Jones and read the Australian, drink beer, support Operation Sovereign Borders, traditional marriage, the Queen, frequent the RSL and are despised and disdained on social media the good news is that Trump and Brexit offer cause for hope.

They are proof that you can befuddle some of the people some of the time but there comes a day of reckoning.

White blue- and dirty-collar males are absolutely pissed-off that politicians’ promises to improve their economic circumstances never happen and it’s always somebody else’s fault”

They’re further frustrated by things like politicians refusing to acknowledge that terrorists are Muslims despite them repeatedly claiming that they are.

While setting new standards in political incorrectness and bad taste Trump nevertheless is a true representation of the frustrated Americans stuck in the middle of the social order where it’s so politically incorrect that other politicians fear to tread.

The first time anyone asked the forgotten classes in the UK whether they were happy to leave an increasing portion of their destiny in the hands of faceless foreigners in Brussels they responded with a resounding ‘no’. The reaction from Brussels was interesting. Instead of congratulating David Cameron on his democratic initiative in bringing on the EU Referendum they criticised it as a lack of judgement.

Imagine what might happen in Australia if the forces aligned with Jacqui, Pauline and Bob Katter all came together in one cacophony of political incorrectness. The Greens would need to become a protected species.

About this Series
As one of Australia’s leading social commentators A Hole is always conscious of the need to avoid making an arse of himself. His commentaries are frequently compared to the material on the walls of public toilets although they don’t remain in the public consciousness anything like as long.
